South Dakota Emergency Medical Services for Children (SD EMSC) works with emergency departments to ensure children receive the best possible care during emergencies. Following the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) guidelines and the National EMSC Performance Measures, we help EDs across the state to pediatric-ready.
Our Goals:
Pediatric Readiness
Ensuring EDs have the resources, guidelines, and trained staff needed to care for sick and injured children.
Quality Improvement
Supporting the National Pediatric Readiness Project (NPRP) by identifying care gaps through surveys and helping EDs strengthen care through evidence-based improvements.
Training and Education
Providing programs and workshops that enhance providers' skills in managing pediatric emergencies and promote a culture of readiness.
Coordinated Care Systems
Building systems that improve collaboration among EMS, hospitals, and other healthcare providers so that children receive timely, effective care.

Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator
The role of a Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC) is diverse and you may serve one or more of these responsibilities by overseeing pediatric specific duties. The PECC role at your ED can be a partnership - physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses can all work together to lift their team up. While it is not required to have an alternate, it is a good idea for each Emergency Department to have more than one point of contact.
Carter Kit Application
Carter Kits™ Sensory Bags contain clinically proven items known to comfort and appropriately focus children who are on the autism spectrum, as well as many other children who occasionally find themselves overwhelmed or otherwise impacted by traumatic events. Carter Kits were initially designed for First Responders, however, the scope of our mission has expanded to many other professions such as law enforcement, school nurses, and more!
Poison Resources and Education
The Sanford Poison Center provides all of the education and prevention efforts for the State of South Dakota.
We are designated by the South Dakota Department of Health to provide emergency poison management and poison prevention information to the citizens of the State of South Dakota.
The Sanford Poison Center currently contracts with the Minnesota Poison Control System, located at Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis, to handle all poisoning exposure calls.
There is an online education course, with CE credits available, for all providers.
Car Seat Tags
SD EMS for Children has designed these tags with the hope of helping to reunify children with their caregivers as quickly as possible in the event of a crisis. Each tag includes a clear adhesive pocket, as well as a two sided insert.
Side 1: Reflective sticker to attract the attention of first responders. This side should be facing out when inserted into the pocket.
Side 2: Emergency Contact and Medical Care Information. This should be filled out for the child that uses this seat.
